Solar Calculator - Quick Guide

How to use the NORD Solar Calculator

Location (Region)

Pick your region in NZ. The PSH value (Peak Sun Hours—average useful sun per day) updates automatically.

Your Usage

  • Daily consumption (kWh) or Monthly consumption (kWh): use whichever you know—both sliders stay in sync. You’ll find monthly kWh on your power bill.
  • Daytime usage (%): share of your electricity used during the day (roughly 9am–5pm). A higher % usually means higher self-consumption and better savings.

Prices / Tariffs

  • Your price ($/kWh): what you pay to buy electricity (import rate).
  • Export price ($/kWh): what your retailer pays you for surplus solar sent to the grid.

System Type

  • Panels only: estimates savings from solar panels without storage.
  • Panels + Battery: reveals Battery size (kWh). A battery stores excess daytime solar for evenings; larger batteries can increase savings when evening use is high.

Target solar fraction (%)

Sets how much of your usage you want solar to cover on average. This influences the recommended system size.

Results (right column)

Estimated solar savings (annual range), Monthly bill (before/after), Monthly saving, 10-year saving (simple), PV size, Annual solar generation, and CO₂e avoided per year (based on NZ average grid intensity).
